Thief steals nearly $100 worth of antacid medicine
Chicago resident James McEwan, 29, was arrested on the night of Sept. 1 after he allegedly stole $94.95 worth of Prevacid from Ultra Foods, 7520 Roosevelt. When police apprehended McEwan near the store, he apologized and told the officer he stole the five packages of over-the-counter antacid medicine because he was "broke."

Man offers to 'get car back' for friend
On the night of Aug. 28, Eric Perry, of Chicago, supposedly told a friend who had been arrested by the Berwyn Police Department and subsequently had his car impounded, that Perry could "get the car out." In doing so, he allegedly stole the car from a police impound lot.

OnStar brings teen's pot-toting joyride to abrupt end
A CTA worker called police to report his Chevy Impala stolen on Aug. 3, at 10:04 p.m. The 43-year-old man said he left the car running and unlocked, then reentered the CTA terminal at 711 Desplaines to speak to the cashier. When he returned, the car was gone.

Backpack full of incriminating evidence
Police charged a Monee man with criminal trespass to a vehicle and with the theft of lost or mislaid property early July 26. Thirty-year-old Shawn Kammer was initially stopped by authorities on the 7700 block of Van Buren St. when he fit the description of a suspicious person looking into vehicles.

On July 6 at 10:06 p.m., police watching Thornton's gas station, 601 S. Harlem, because of recent local armed robberies saw a tan Infiniti park away from the gas pumps. A man appeared to be slumped over in the front seat.

On June 28 at 4:02 p.m., an officer at Roosevelt and Hannah who noticed a passing driver wasn't wearing his seatbelt, ran the vehicle's plate and learned the auto was owned by a man with a suspended license and an active Piatt County arrest warrant.

A toothpaste thief's luck ran out after he was arrested and slapped with felony retail theft on the afternoon of June 7. CVS security contacted police after watching surveillance footage of Kenyatta Cage, 37, of Chicago, stuffing nine tubes of toothpaste in his pants.

Defiant chip thief charged with obstruction
A Bellwood man reportedly walked into a convenience store on the 700 block of Desplaines Avenue and blatantly swiped a bag of Jay's Hot Chips on the night of April 12. When the clerk asked 22-year-old Corey Lee if he had any intention of paying for the bag - as Lee was casually walking out the door - the alleged thief implied that he didn't and simply replied: "[Expletive] you."
