Knitting is back and better than ever! The library sponsored an introductory knitting class led by Susan Ross a few weeks ago and there was standing room only. The advanced knitters helped the beginners and everyone helped everyone else.

Sept. 8 will be Literacy Day at local libraries. Come and learn how easy and rewarding it is to tutor adults who have not learned to read English. Whole Foods Market will host a community support day in honor of the occasion by donating 5 percent of customers' grocery bills to the organization.

May Bill got into another barroom brawl and fell off a barstool after some guy punched her in the eye. Well, anyway, that's what it looked like. Actually, she was walking big, black Edgar Allan Poe, her daughter Janet's shar pei "puppy" who weighs in at about 140 pounds.

Are you still there? The heat didn't get you yet? Jodi Gianakopoulos, of The Old School Records, loves this heat and can't get enough work done before it goes away. Their little dog, Brandy, is gradually recovering the use of her legs. Big girl Evianna is doing very well on her 15-month-old legs.

If you read this column last week, you deserve an apology. The column went in before the flood, so no mention was made of it. Sorry for all who had water damage. Some blamed Tony Calderone. I'm not the president of his fan club, but certainly the flooding was not his fault.

When Sarah and Daniel Gasse moved into town about 10 years ago, little attention was given to them. But in their quiet way, they have contributed mightily to the cultural growth of Forest Park. Sarah, a violinist and violist is from England. Daniel is a cellist from Argentina.

It was a memorable Memorial Day for the Roach family. Daddy, husband, Paul - that's Commander Paul Roach, U.S. Navy - returned from deployment in Afghanistan. The remainder of his Navy time will be spent caring for the sick and injured at Great Lakes Naval Base.

| Singing at Saengerfest in 'San Antonio' |
Welcome home to the 11 members of Harlem Männer and Damen Chor. The singers recently attended the 60th National Saengerfest of German choirs in San Antonio, Texas. They were among 130 singers representing the Chicago district. Altogether eight district choruses attended this festival.
